Devotions: Acts 1-11

Devotion 1: Know with Certainty

Key Scripture Verse:

Acts 1:3 - he also presented himself alive to them by many convincing proofs, appearing to them over a period of forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God."

Devotional:

In the book of Acts, Luke provides a detailed account of Jesus' life, teachings, and resurrection appearances, offering certainty to believers like Theophilus. Just as Luke aimed to assure Theophilus, we too find assurance in the eyewitness testimony preserved in Scripture. Amidst doubts and skepticism, returning to the foundational truths of Jesus' life and teachings brings clarity and certainty to our faith.

Discussion Question:

How can we strengthen our confidence in the reliability and truthfulness of Scripture?

Prayer:

Lord, thank you for the certainty we find in your Word. Help us to trust in its truth and reliability, especially when doubts arise. Amen.

Devotion 2: The Promise of the Holy Spirit

Key Scripture Verse:

Acts 1:4-5 (CSB)

"While he was with them, he commanded them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for the Father’s promise. 'Which,' he said, 'you have heard me speak about; for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit in a few days.'"

Devotional:

Jesus' promise of the Holy Spirit marks a significant transition for believers. Just as the apostles awaited this promise in Jerusalem, we too anticipate the empowering presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives. The Spirit equips us to comprehend God's truth, empowers us for ministry, and guides us in fulfilling our mission as witnesses for Christ.

Discussion Question:

How have you experienced the empowering presence of the Holy Spirit in your life and ministry?

Prayer:

Holy Spirit, fill us with your presence and power as we wait upon you. Guide us in understanding God's truth and empower us to fulfill our mission as witnesses for Christ. Amen.

Devotion 3: The Kingdom of God

Key Scripture Verse:

Acts 1:6-7 (CSB)

"So when they had come together, they asked him, 'Lord, are you restoring the kingdom to Israel at this time?' He said to them, 'It is not for you to know times or periods that the Father has set by his own authority.'"

Devotional:

The disciples' question about the restoration of the kingdom reflects their anticipation of a political restoration of Israel. However, Jesus redirects their focus to the broader reality of God's kingdom. Just as the disciples sought clarity about God's plans, we too may wrestle with understanding God's timing and purposes. Yet, Jesus reminds us to trust in God's sovereignty and authority over all things.

Discussion Question:

How can we maintain a kingdom-focused perspective in our lives amidst earthly concerns and uncertainties?

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, help us to trust in your sovereignty and authority over all things. May we remain kingdom-minded in our thoughts and actions, seeking first your kingdom and righteousness. Amen.

Devotion 4: The Mission

Key Scripture Verse:

Acts 1:8 (CSB)

"But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come on you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."

Devotional:

Jesus' commission to his disciples emphasizes the vital role of the Holy Spirit in fulfilling their mission. Similarly, as believers, we are empowered by the Holy Spirit to bear witness to Christ's gospel locally and globally. Our mission extends beyond geographical boundaries, encompassing every sphere of influence where we can share the love and truth of Jesus Christ.

Discussion Question:

How can we effectively fulfill our mission as witnesses for Christ in our local communities and beyond?

Prayer:

Lord, empower us by your Spirit to boldly proclaim the gospel and make disciples of all nations. Guide us in fulfilling our mission with wisdom, courage, and compassion. Amen.

Devotion 5: Jesus’ Ascension and Return

Key Scripture Verse:

Acts 1:9-11 (CSB)

"After he had said this, he was taken up as they were watching, and a cloud took him out of their sight. While he was going, they were gazing into heaven, and suddenly two men in white clothes stood by them. They said, 'Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up into heaven? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come in the same way that you have seen him going into heaven.'"

Devotional:

The ascension of Jesus marks a pivotal moment in redemptive history, as he returns to the Father's right hand in heaven. Yet, the promise of his return remains a source of hope and anticipation for believers. Just as the disciples were reminded of Jesus' eventual return by the angelic messengers, we too await his second coming with expectant hearts, knowing that he will come again in power and glory.

Discussion Question:

How does the promise of Jesus' return impact the way we live and anticipate the future?

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, we eagerly await your glorious return when you will come again to make all things new. May we live each day in readiness and anticipation of your coming kingdom, faithfully serving you until that day. Amen.
